Because she just needed something good looking and quick, it was a pretty easy job since Cargo did most of the heavy lifting. After curating the best of their work and organising it, I appropriated the graphics and finally created a an image map banner and a splash animation for the front page, sourced from Masia's video Montreal In The Fall.

The idea came about, last Christmas break, while watching House of Flying Daggers; one of my favourite films ever. I decided I wanted to curate some of the best Wuxia films and have some friends over to watch them over two days. I designed this mock festival poster for the Facebook event and may possibly print it at A2 size.

Starting in May, I'll be a resident DJ at Starving Artist, a local Toronto waffle bar. As promo, I've decided to create trailers for each Paul Chin Spins session. Footage was taken from my first session at the bar, back in February, so I decided to get some good use out of it.

For my final project in my core class, I had to do a packaging illustration for a Harrods tea. We had a number of options in terms of flavour and I opted to go with the Indian Ruby Chai. The illustration flows around three sides; the lovely couple being in the center panel (4x4 inches). I created a seamless paisley pattern to fill the bottom, played with the theme of Indian trains and filled a lot of the compositional space with layers of steam. All in all, I'd say this was the first school piece I've done in a long time and really had fun with it.

I remembered having a conversation with her, a while back, where she mentioned she'd never had a Moleskine notebook before (which was just preposterous, since she's such an excellent writer) so I decided to get her one. I then decided to spice it up by creating a personal design for her that I would apply directly to the cover. I created some hand-lettered type for her name then illustrated a single colour graphic portrait of her face to go with it then screenprinted it to the front.

Saudade is a Portuguese language word difficult to translate adequately, which describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for something or someone that one was fond of and which is lost. It often carries a fatalist tone and a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might really never return.

I'm currently in the process of recording my debut album, Age of Atlas, and I'm more than halfway into it so I've decided to start working on the art and design aspect of it. I'll be keeping an ongoing process book of all the single covers; promo pieces; posters and, ultimately, the final album cover. Toying with essentialist illustration and design has been fun for me. It's an interesting method; breaking down objects into their most basic forms and this is super convenient for screen printing.

Pieces (in order):
• Heartbeat (Valentine's Day) single art
• Sick Days & All Nighters: Live from The El Mocambo album art
• Paul Chin Spins: Reading Week Kickoff gig poster
• Paul Chin Spins: Birthday Beat Bangers gig poster
• Paul Chin Spins: Asian Persuasion gig poster
• HearSay Music & Cold Fire Present: All Nighter gig poster
• Toronto ♥ Japan Benefit Concert gig poster
• Heartbeat (Valentine's Day) t-shirt
• ohyeahpaulchin x Starving Artist collaboration t-shirt

Over the Christmas break, I interned at BB&P Ad Agency. The project they gave me was to come up with and produce their annual Christmas promo greeting for clients and to be as over-the-top as possible in showcasing them as a fun and creative agency.

My idea was to choreograph a music video to a design studio-centric version of Jingle Bells and get everyone in the office involved (from the Art Director's kids to his dog)! I produced the instrumental, rewrote the lyrics then took it to a couple friends of mine to sing vocals and engineer the mix. Finally, I brought my cinematographer, Rhian, in to shoot and colour, and thus the first Nautilus Media Group corporate collaboration!

Interestingly enough, I've studied the history of the publication extensively, this semester, because of another class I took. That being said, I wanted to convey this vibe of Summertime activities in New York by way of a funky fresh girl moving through the city with her ghetto blaster and gold rope. Also, if the background looks familiar, it's because it's a revised version of the background of this website!
